The filtration system is state of the art! I copied the system created by Bean Animal, found online at this link. Basically there is a rear wier-ed overflow box and 3 rear 65mm holes drilled through the back top glass that plumb down to the sump tank. The system is dynamic at a wide range of sump water levels, always drains silently, no splashing, no gurgle, and is safe in the event of power outages or overflows.
The sump tank is a custom bit I made myself. Water enters silently by gravity from the plumbing above, flows through a refugium area, down across foam filter pads (reusable) supported by egg crate, down and up the bubble trap, through some state of the art ceramic spheres, activated carbon, and finally down a metal ramp into the pump chamber. All build materials were recorded so I can show you everything that was done to make this beauty!
It took 2 months but I eventually turned the wood to "bog wood" so it sinks naturally instead of floating.
I use only microfiltered, softened water. Water test results are always logged and tracked for fish health.
main display tank is 72" long, 24" high, 24" deep
all assembled with stand and canopy, the whole thing is 74.25" long, 63" high, and 25.5" deep
South American Fish population includes:
Red Oscar - Astronotus Ocellatus - currently 6" but grows to 12"+
Gold Severum - Heros efasciatus - currently 4" but grows to 9"
Firemouth - Thorichthys meeki - currently 5" but has a little more growth left
Blue Acara - Aequidens pulcher - currently 4" but grows to 6"
Featherfin Catfish - Synodontis euptera - currently 5" but grows to 9"
5x spotted silver dollars - Metynnis lippincottianus - currently 4" but grow to 6".
All fish were purchased as babies together back in April 2016 and have grown peacefully together this whole time. I would like to keep them together. Most reach maturity in early 2017 but the larger ones will be another year. They have not been sick. Each species was chosen carefully for compatibility, water preferences, and adult size (for biomass filtration needs). To keep these healthy, you probably shouldn't add more than 1 or 2 mid size south american fish of your own around 5" adult.
Sophisticated purchasers only please. This tank is not the best for first time fish owners, kids, etc. I have several thousand dollars into this and several heartfuls of love. Come by anytime and check it out! I'm in Lemoore, CA, which is near Fresno or Visalia in Central California.
